My first problem with Iowa
posted by: Zach Larson on 09-19-2006
I have been meaning to write this for quite some time now and it may sound stupid since I live in Iowa now, but apparently I learned to drive somewhere else. Most Iowa drivers cannot drive. Here are a few things I have noticed:

1. - People in Iowa do not use their turning signals. Almost everyday while driving home from work the car in front of me will start slowing down for no reason so I'll look ahead to see if something is happening ahead, but then, all of a sudden they turn. "Oh my bad, I forgot that the black Tahoe turns left at this corner. I guess I better make a note of that so I will remember next time.".

2. - This one gets to me more than anything. When I am waiting to turn right on red and the guy across the street is turning left and he cuts to the farthest lane possible making it impossible for me to go at the same time as him. The worst is when they cut all the way across and then signal over into the correct lane. I mean WTF is wrong with you? Its more than likely that large turning radius from your giant SUV that is limiting your turning capabilities so I guess I can let it slide this time (sarcasm).

3. - Cellphones. Why not just stare at the floor and try to drive home, you might be better off than some people when they are on their phones. I've been cut off by people on their cellphones and then flipped off by them because they had no idea what was going on. GET OFF THE PHONE! What is so important that you can't call before you get in the car or when you get home. More than likely you are going to be in the car for 10-15 minutes. I think it can wait. Oh yeah, I mean you do look super important and cool nowadays on a cellphone because no one else has one.

Stop being stupid.

1. i definitely agree.
2. i mega agree.
3. i think that this is highly dependent on the person. maybe it should be a part drivers ed now... one test could be to drive while on the cell phone, if you cannot do it you get a mark on your license ... or something. basically some people are completely horrible at driving with cell phones, and others can manage. it goes along with that walking and chewing gum thing.
4. my biggest pet peave about iowa drivers is, GET OUT OF THE LEFT LANE. omg. Iowa drivers are retarded about this. They just hang out in any lane they please. And then they will get mad and speed up if you try to pass them on the right. Illinois has this law where you can get a ticket for driving in the left lane if you're not passing someone. Plus they taught us that in driver's ed. Plus it's just a common courtesy. Plus there are signs posted in Iowa that say "slower vehicles keep right" ... but maybe in Iowa you need more descriptive signs, like that one in Johnston about the road being closed. You know.. they had the road block with the giant, "ROAD CLOSED" sign. Apparently they didn't learn about that in drivers ed either because next to it there's a sign that said, "If you don't live on this road, don't use it"

Now I'm all riled up. haha.
