Rico leaving Pioneer and Oktoberfest
posted by: Zach Larson on 09-27-2006
Last Friday Trent and I left work around 3pm to head down to Oktoberfest in Des Moines. This is a yearly thing that Hessen Haus hosts in front of their bar. I tried every beer they had down there. We were really surprised at how many people were downtown drinking at 3pm. It was a nice mix of construction workers and guys and who just got off work from 801 Grand. After that I went home to get Amy to head out to Ricos house. He had a big "going away" party at his house last Friday night where a ton of people from work came out to watch a big fire, have some drinks, and hang out. He worked at Pioneer for 20 years and decided to move onto better things.

On Saturday Amy and I went to West Des Moines for a while. We walked around the mall for a while and went to the brewing supply store so I could pick up a carboy. That afternoon I siphoned my beer from the primary fermenter into the carboy for the secondary fermenting. Later that day Amy and I went with Derek and Kari to Jimmys American Cafe to check out the cars from the 2030 Club Road Rally. We saw some cool cars and also some crappy ones. Earlier that day while we were driving to West Des Moines we ended up on this road in the middle on nowhere and Amy saw a car and was like "hey what is that?". It was a red Ford GT followed by 2 Ferrari F430's and a BMW Z4 (which was really out of place with the other cars). None of the cars had license plates and they had an escort behind them. I pulled over to try and get a shot of one of the Ferrari's and the driver saw me and dumped it right in front me. The whole car went sideways. So awesome and so loud. I thought these cars must be from the Road Rally group but they didnt show up at the car show so I don't know what they were doing. After the car show we went back down to Oktoberfest and hung out for a while. We watched a beer carrying wench contest and saw a really really drunk guy. Amy and I took off around 10 because Amy had to work early on Sunday.

On Sunday I got bored so I went ahead and got some wood to start my work bench for the garage. I made a couple pieces of the frame with only my handsaw which sucked so I didnt get very far. On Monday I borrowed Dereks miter saw and things are going a lot smoother. Im going to finish it over lunch today. Its turning out really nice.
